New York Republicans split on who won 2020 presidential election

A majority of likely Republican voters this fall will head to the voting booth believing that Donald Trump was the “legitimate winner” of the 2020 presidential election, according to a new survey from the Siena College Research Institute.

The polling released on Wednesday indicates that 40 percent of likely GOP voters think President Joe Biden won fair and square, while 51 percent think the former president should be serving in the White House right now. There’s no significant division among likely Democratic voters, with 92 percent identifying Biden as the legitimate winner and 4 percent naming Trump.

Likely Republican voters were also split on the question of whether this fall’s election will be “conducted fairly,” with efforts made to prevent fraud and insure eligible voter participation. Three-quarters of likely Democratic voters believe this will be the outcome, while 17 percent are less optimistic about the voting process. These results – for both parties – were mirrored when asked about trusting the  outcome of the 2022 elections.
