June 3, 2020: Sheltering without a home: COVID-19 creates additional challenges for foster youth
Sheltering at home is just one of the tools used in stopping the spread of COVID-19. However, New Yorkers aging out of the foster care system face obstacles in obtaining housing and employment. As the pandemic continues to have a major impact on the Empire State, advocates for foster youth are asking the Governor to implement on a moratorium on this aging out process. We heard from Richard Heyl de Ortiz, Director of Training of Program Support at Court Appointed Special Advocates of New York State and CHAMPS NY Steering Committee member, and Jeanette Rivera, Court Appointed Special Advocates of New York City Youth Leadership Council member and former foster youth, about why this moratorium is so critical.
