June 9, 2020: Police required to get medical help for people in custody in new bill

In May of 2017, after being taken into police custody, 36-year-old Andrew Kearse complained about having trouble breathing. Despite asking for help, Kearse was not taken to a hospital and later died of a heart attack. Now, legislation named after Kearse would impose liability for the failure to obtain medical help for a person in custody displaying distress. Asm. Nathalia Fernandez (D-Bronx) broke down on how this bill would work if enacted.
